Surrealism (Free Association)
Description:
As my exploration of ballpoint pen continued, I found it interesting how the morphing face in this drawing involuntarily became an echo of what this piece represents; a meditation, where focus was purely fixed on the mechanics of drawing, rather than a specific subject.
To create shadows with a ballpoint pen, the artist not only has to be cognizant of line spacing, which softens or intensifies graduations (shadows), but also, of the paper's texture (whether smooth or rough) and the amount of pressure (light or hard) being applied to each line.
Thus, the title for this drawing came to be, creating muscle memory through application; because of the mindfulness that is required to create depth and dimension using a permanent medium on paper.
