Free-Form Study: Filling Space
1991

Medium:
Pencil on Paper
Dimensions:
17 x 11 inches
Genre/Style:
Surrealism
Description:
Up to this point, most of my drawings had been composed on standard, letter sized paper or smaller, and I was becoming more and more curious about creating larger works, which seemed daunting at the time.
This Free Form Study (which is also an imaginary still life) was an attempt to do just that, to fill more space. But, it was also an exploration of shadow and light, which helped ground my imagination in the observable; learning to shade large areas to creating the impression of a fixed, single source of light.
This was my largest drawing at the time, created on 11 x 17 inch paper.
