An Incongruous Manifestation is one the artist's earliest examples of Automatism, a spontaneous method of drawing that has become a staple in his creative arsenal.
 
Automatism is a process of creating art without preconceived ideas, rational thought or intention; instead relying on impulse and (unconscious) associations to arrive at a completed image.
 
For this reason, the imagery in this drawing can seem (or is) random (as its title suggests). However, this process does have utility as well; when utilized to spark creativity; or, when taking a deep dive into one's inner workings without the filters of the ego (which often sensors or omits impulses that seem incompatible, discordant or uncomfortable).
