"Encountering the Unknown" is about confronting uncertainty and the impulse of fear, which is often irrational.
 
The subject in this painting has been stripped of her clothes (which is symbolic of her confidence) and backed into a corner with no escape... except for a doorway into the unknown.
 
This dark door, of course, is only psychologically perceived as a threat, because she simply can't see what is on the other side; whether danger, or an unrecognized opportunity.
 
Ultimately, the only way to know what awaits her... is to take that step.
