a surreal depiction of the artist's sub-consciousness, becoming aware of the artist's conscious presence

Of my Early Works, this painting always felt like a depiction of my own sub-consciousness looking back at me, as if caught unaware and asking... what are you doing here?

To support this feeling, there is a resolved directness to some of the details in this image, such as the wall that separates light from darkness (consciousness from the unconscious) and the hanging feet, which indicates an inward journey (where feet are not needed).

This also means then, that I am the intruder here.

Of course, I'm not entirely sure what this painting truly reveals, or, if there is anything to reveal; other than an introduction being made (to my Self). After all, the half-illumined figure in this surreal self portrait could literally represent a first impression, which is almost unavoidably incomplete.

Although, as a viable alternative... philosophy would suggest that the figure in this image may also portray the sub-consciousness as being unaware of itself (in this moment); not only having just been retrieved from the shadow of the mind, but also, having only ever known darkness (like in Plato's Allegory of the Cave).
